Around 40% of the world's Indoor farms use a synthetic “soil” called rockwool grow-media to grow crops in hydroponic systems. This grow-media is becoming a little-known pollution problem.

(3) Recycle or Landfill Rockwool After-Use

(1&2) Rockwool is created by mining rock and heating rock up to 1500 °C in a rotary kiln to create a "cotton-candy"-like material called rockwool fibers. These fibers are then manufactured into popular products such as rockwool insulation and rockwool grow-media.

(3) Rockwool must be shipped to complex and sophisticated recycling centers. The energy-intensive recycling process is not accessible to many users, resulting in the landfilling of Rockwool in many areas of the world.
